The Bujinkan Theme for 2012 training is “futsu” and there will be a lot of trainings with the sword. When I’m writing this the trainings haven’t started yet, and no one really knows what the trainings will be like. I’ve already seen some good articles explaining some concepts, but I’m not sure if they will help you or plant something different in your mind that will distract you from what Hatsumi Soke will teach us this year.

At Budoshop.se we got many Bujinkan sword DVD’s from the past years that might be good for studying the base sword work that is taught in the Bujinkan. We also have Swedish Tai Kai DVD’s with Hatsumi Soke, he always taught a lot of sword techniques in the past to. Suwari kata : Five techniques from a sitting position.

Katate-dori kata : Five techniques from a one hand grab situation.

Ryote-dori kata : Seven techniques against two handed grab situations.

Haibu-yoru kata : Five techniques from grabs from behind.

Tsuki-uchi kata : Nine techniques from a punching situation.

Keri ni taisuru ukemi kata : Five techniques from kicking attacks.

Tsuki to keri ni taisuru ukemi kata : Four techniques from striking and kicking attacks.

Nage kaeshi kata : Nine techniques from throwing attempts.

Tonso kata: Three release, attack and escaping forms.

Muto-dori kata: Four techniques from knife and sword attacks.

All these 56 techniques is shown 2-3 times from different angles and explained shortly. This was filmed outside and it is sometimes difficult to hear what is said, but the way Mats teaches is very easy to understand by body language, so don’t worry about that. The instructions is all in English.

The theme this year was Hontai Takagiyôshin-ryû and Daishô. Arne was in Japan in october, and Mats was in Japan november/december. They taught mostly Takagiyôshin-ryû techniques including… Ikichigae, Kasumi Dori, Onikudaki (plus 2 techniques we don’t know the name of), Sannindori, Omotegyaku ken sabaki and much more. The instructors speak Swedish on this video!

About the instructor

Mats Hjelm started training in Bujinkan for the first time around 1983, but it wasn’t until 1986 he had the opportunity to start training more seriously under a Shidôshi. He attends around 20 seminars, go to Japan 2-3 times every year. Since he started training he never had a training break. He takes his budo training very seriously! Sanshin no kata and Kihon-happo is the most fundamental and important techniques in the Bujinkan Dojo. Five blocking techniques and five counter strikes was taught; the basic form and also jissen feeling.

Ten Chi Jin Ryaku no Maki is the absolute foundation of Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu, unarmed fighting and self defence techniques.

Recorded in Stockholm, Sweden September 2002 -- February 2003

Kaigozan dojo and many other use these techniques as a base for ranking beginners up to 1′st degree black belt.

Ten ryaku no maki: 9 kyu -- 7 kyu (yellow belt)
Chi ryaku no maki: 6 kyu -- 4 kyu (green belt)
Jin ryaku no maki: 3 kyu -- 1 kyu (brown belt)

All these techniques is demonstrated on this video 1-3 times. It is not a self study course, it should rather be seen as a reference material and a compliment to your studies with a good teacher.

There is no verbal instructions or speaking on this video. So it doesn’t require that you know English or any other language.

This is one of the first videos we made. It was filmed between 2002 and 2003. The movie quality is not very good. But it has been our best seller since we opened our web shop. Many people like to know the basics .

Note: Not all teachers use this curricullum exactly for their ranking. But the techniques are the most fundamental and basic techniques in the Bujinkan Dojo system. So it is worth studying anyway!
