Dean Rostohar – Shinken kata vol 9 – Knife & Pistol / Fighting & Tactics

Dean taught us how to use the knife and pistol. How to carry them, how to draw them, how to use them against unarmed or unarmed opponent. He also taught how to defend against the same kind of attacks.

By learning how to use a knife and a pistol and getting to know how they can be used against someone, you also get a far better understanding how to defend yourself against these weapons. Dean taught us how to use the knife and pistol. How to carry them, how to draw them, how to use them against unarmed or unarmed opponent. These techniques is done with the knowledge and principles of what we learn in Bujinkan Budo-taijutsu from grandmaster Masaaki Hatsumi Soke. Hatsumi Soke have asked Dean to teach us the real fighting principles from his experience as he see that many people in Bujinkan only play around without really understanding the true fighting principles that he teach. This seminar was organized in Stockholm, Sweden on 29th and 30th of October 2011.

About the Instructor

Dean Shihan has a lot of experience from real fighting in the independence war of Croatia, and also from his time in the police force. He was born 1965 and started training Martial Arts at the age of 10. He have experience from many martial arts styles but he was not completely satisfied with them until he found the warrior art – Bujinkan Ninjutsu/Ninpo Taijutsu. The theme of the seminar was traditional Japanese long Ninja weapons, Yari (spear) and Naginata (halberd). Kunren Shugyo in Japanese terminology represents the studying of training. Therefore the seminar participants have studied for two days, the ways, the principles, techniques and philosophy of combat with those traditional weapons we use in Bujinkan Ninjutsu.

The ways and techniques of fighting with long weapons are very important for understanding Taijutsu (unarmed combat), because this way we get to know our body and the possibilities of its use through combat techniques.

The techniques with Naginata were done on the first day of the seminar, while techniques with the Yari were done the second day. Also defence against several opponents, combinations with Naginata and sword, and unarmed defence against the Yari was taught.

This is a very good video if you are interested in realistic self-defence and fighting from the Bujinkan system. We also recommend this video to anyone working or interested in security work as a guard or police. Although some of the techniques is not allowed to use in police force/work you can still see how it could be used against you if the opponent is good.

On this seminar Shihan Dean Rostohar from Croatia, taught Hoken Juroppo, real combat and explosive techniques with usage of all parts of human body surfaces through Jutaijutsu and Dakentaijutsu.

In Ninpo Budo Taijutsu, whole body is a weapon, where the way of fighting is totally diferent then in sports. Like a guide, to students, a Ninja way of fighting uses whole body for hitting, which consists of 16 basic body weapons called Juroppoken Taijutsu.

The knife is a weapon that we can encounter every day and it’s one of the most dangerous weapons, especially in the hands of an expert. The knife is also one of the basic weapons and tools of elite Special forces, and is an obligatory part of training.Knife fighting is, by it’s nature, dirty, dangerous and deadly.

In order to know how to defend from a knife, it is neccesary to know how the knife functions and how to fight with it. Unfortunately, with increasing crime rate, the number of victims of knife attack has also increased, what we can see every day in the media.

However, the knife is also a great self-defence mean in the situations of ultimate neccessity. There is no efficient defence against the knife, if you don’t understand this weapon.

This seminar was dedicated to combat tactics with a knife. Through various combat technics and drills with a knife, the students was learned tactics of fighting with a knife. The combat technic drills are very important in tactics of knife fighting because the drills teach us how to manipulate the knife, how to properly move, properly use our body and knife in exercises without a partner. Drills also teach us how to react properly, and to train and learn our movements and reflexes in exercises with a partner, so that it would be useful in possible combat.

All aspects of fighting with or against the knife, technics with standard and reverse knife grip, basic cuts and stabs, the ways of carrying and drawing the knife, tactical movement, tactical grabbing of the attackers weapon, taking attackers attack into a trap, the technics of immobilizing with a knife, tactical reflex drills, entering and dynamic attack with the body, the principle defence=>attack; attack=>defence, tactical disarming with the knife, using body with knife technics, etc. was shown and trained on the seminar.

In order for someone to know how to use the knife as a mean of self-defence, he has to know how to combine the technics with a proper psycho-physical attitude.
